How Are Quilts Made?
A patchwork of blocks, squares or rags are stitched together in a specific pattern for visual appeal, based on grain of the fabric, shapes and prints, colors and designs. Blocks are cut by hand or with a rotary cutting tool, and are pressed before being sewn or stitched together by a narrow quarter inch seam. Alternatively, a rag style is where the seams of the cotton, plaid, denim or flannel squares are not neatly sewn and hidden but instead left exposed for a more handmade, rustic design. They typically have three parts a front, back and the middle-batting layer. The front, top or face is made of the sewn together blocks, patchwork squares or rags. The backing can either be a single fabric layer, or a patchwork of blocks or rags like the front. The middle layer or batting, is a thin polyester batting with provides insulation and warmth and also gives a three dimensional effect.
What Is The Difference Between a Quilt and a Bedspread?
A bedspread is normally an unquilted bed cover, many made of a woven cotton fabric called chenille, which creates a tufted patterned surface, bedspreads drape all the way to the ground. A quilt is a padded or insulated bedding cover, normally made of blocks or rags of fabric, with a middle layer of insulation or batting padding, and drapes over the mattress or box spring, but does not drape to the ground. Both bedding types are ideal for summer months and warmer climates similar to coverlets and matelassé coverlets, but in winter and colder climates thick insulated comforters, duvet covers and down comforters are a better choices.
